Andy Murray called out a reporter’s casual sexism at the podium after a Wimbledon loss to American Sam Querrey on Wednesday (July 12).
A reporter asked Andy about Sam “becoming the first American to reach a grand slam semi-final since 2009,” and Andy responded, “male player.” The audience in the room laughed, but Andy remained straight faced and serious.
American tennis star Serena Williamshas won 12 Grand Slam Tournaments since 2009. Venus Williams just reached the Wimbledon semi-finals Tuesday, and has been a celebrated player for years as well. Other American female players include Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Keys, who have played in Grand Slam semi-finals in the past couple of years.
