Madonna hugs her daughter Mercy James during the opening ceremony of the Mercy James Children’s Hospital at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi on Tuesday (July 11)
The hospital was funded by the singer’s Raising Malawi charity. Madonna has adopted four children from the country: Mercy James, 11, David Banda, 11, and her new twin girls. All four were in attendance and David and Mercy spoke on stage during the ceremony.
“The Mercy James Center remains not only a world-class intensive care hospital, but also a superior learning environment to train the next generation of Malawian healthcare workers,” Madonna said during her speech (via CNN). “This is as much about healing as it is about empowerment.”
“It is a great honor to know this hospital is named after me,” Mercy James said in her speech. “But what’s more important is that we may help many kids and save many lives.”
